Kate Matteson was an actor and crossover vocalist whose work spanned a variety of genres. She was a classically trained soprano who attended the Eastman School of Music, and she also held a Ph.D. in human development. As a New York-based musical theater actor, Kate played leading roles in regional theaters and national tours. Kate performed the leading lady role of Magnolia in the Broadway tour of Show Boat in the U.S. and Canada. That production, under the guidance of legendary director Harold Prince, garnered five Tony Awards. Kate also toured nationally as leading lady Hope Harcourt in Anything Goes.
Regionally, Kate played the title roles in Gypsy and Gigi, as well as principal roles in Yeston/Kopit's Phantom (Christine), Brigadoon (Fiona), A Little Night Music (Anne), Annie (Grace Farrell), Man of La Mancha (Antonia), Crazy for You (Irene Roth), Private Lives (Sybil), Nunsense (Sister Mary Amnesia), Arms and the Man (Raina), The Student Prince (Princess Margaret), The Fantasticks (Luisa), and Lend Me a Tenor (Maggie). She was featured as the lead singer on Alaskan and Caribbean cruise ships, and played leading roles at Tokyo Disneyland.
Kate was a recurring vocalist with the Saratoga Orchestra, serving as soloist in pops and classical concerts including Handel's Messiah. She performed a solo benefit concert titled The Best of Broadway, and sang staged musical theater songs in A Broadway Cabaret. Kate performed staged solos and duets with Karl Olsen (a member of the folk group The Brothers Four) in Some Enchanted Evening, a concert of theater songs. Kate's vocals have been featured in numerous engagements with the Tall Granite Big Band and The Prodigals Jazz Band, and she performed with renowned trombonist Delfeayo Marsalis.
Kate shared the stage with Emmy Award-winners David Canary (All My Children), Karen Morrow, Charlotte Rae (The Facts of Life), and Pat Harrington (One Day at a Time), as well as John McCook (The Bold and The Beautiful), Anita Gillette (Moonstruck), Tony Award-winner Alice Ripley, and Jamie Lynn Sigler (The Sopranos). She studied voice with Lynn Wickham and longtime Metropolitan Opera singer Marcia Baldwin, and worked with renowned Broadway choreographers Susan Stroman and Wayne Cilento.
Kate's voice can be heard as the soloist on the inspirational albums Follow and Rejoice and
Musical Inspirations, and her singing has been broadcast on Sentinel Radio. In addition to extensive church soloing, Kate’s singing has been featured in public lectures and interfaith music concerts. She made her composing debut on her solo album, Joyful Waking - a CD of freshly arranged hymns and new songs created to comfort and uplift.
